Dreaming Frida Mug

$20.00

Durable ceramic mug. 11oz

Enjoy a cup of coffee or your favorite hot drink in this colorful design including an illustration of one of the most iconic artists of Mexico, Frida Kahlo. This whimsical design created by me, Miguel Ayuso is full of little secrets:

1- I focused on portraying a calming presence. Frida was a fighter and her life was full of dramatic events and unforgiving illnesses. Here I want her to be seen as a dreamer, the side of her that I identify with the most.

2- While she appears to be static on the left side of the composition, her hair and the flowers that adorn it float towards the middle of the design as if she’s dreaming of the simple beauty in life. Eventually the flowers morph into birds and the birds into stars in an Escher-esque transformation.

3- Frida’s dreams float over representations of two iconic Mexican volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl (Popo and Izta), the warrior and the sleeping princess.

4- Frida wears a huipil (wee-peel) one of the most ubiquitous indigenous female garments commonly worn by women in Oaxaca, Mexico - my hometown.

5- Frida had a deep love for jewelry with pre-Hispanic symbols and animals. Here she wears a jade necklace with an image of a jaguar, considered sacred by various pre-Colombian populations.
